You’ve heard of spring cleaning for your home, but what about your health?
Have you noticed:
- More sugar cravings?
- Sluggish energy?
- Trouble sleeping?
- Extra stress?
If so, your hormones might be asking for a reset! The good news? You don’t need a harsh cleanse, just a few simple things can help you feel lighter, more energized, and back in balance. In my functional medicine and health coaching practice, I find this is a great way to help women check in seasonally with themselves, especially if they are in perimenopause or menopause.
Take Inventory: What Feels Stuck?
Before jumping into changes, pause and check in with yourself. What’s feeling stale, stuffy, or stuck right now? Maybe you’ve been indoors too much, stuck in the same routine, or feeling low on energy. Ask yourself:
- Do I need more movement?
- Am I craving fresh, lighter foods?
- Is my stress creeping up?
- How is my sleep?
This awareness makes it easier to refresh your habits.
Move Your Body (and Make It Fun!)
Our bodies are meant to move. But movement doesn’t have to mean long workouts or something you dread. Spring is the perfect time to switch things up:
- Dance in your kitchen
- Try a new yoga or Pilates class
- Walk somewhere new, hiking trails, parks, even a new neighborhood
- Lift weights, muscle is key for metabolism & hormone balance
Just move in a way that feels good, your body will thank you.
Reset Your Sugar Intake
Been leaning on sweets for energy? You’re not alone! But here’s the thing, sugar cravings feed themselves. The more sugar you eat, the more your body wants it. Too much sugar impacts:
- Energy (hello, crashes!)
- Sleep (blood sugar swings can wake you up at night)
- Weight gain (especially around the belly, thanks to insulin)
Try a 7-day sugar detox by cutting back on processed foods, watching hidden sugars in sauces & snacks, and replacing sweet treats with fruit. You’ll be amazed at how quickly cravings fade.
Reevaluate Caffeine (Is It Helping or Hurting?)
Love your coffee or tea? I love my black and green tea, but I do have to regulate it. Here’s the thing, if you rely on caffeine to wake up or push through energy crashes, it could be a sign of hormone imbalance, especially with cortisol.
Try swapping coffee for:
- Matcha or green tea (less caffeine, steady energy)
- Herbal teas (I love the Yogi tea brand for support lowering stress, immunity, digestion)
- More water (dehydration feels like fatigue!)
If you’re not sure how caffeine is affecting you, take a break for a week and notice what changes.
Spring Clean Your Diet (No Drastic Detox Required)
Forget extreme cleanses, you don’t need them! A true spring reset is all about adding in the right foods:
- More veggies (aim for at least 5 servings a day). My personal faves are asparagus and broccoli.
- Whole foods (minimize processed stuff)
- Healthy proteins (wild fish, organic chicken, grass-fed beef, or plant-based sources)
- Healthy fats (avocados, nuts, olive oil, coconut, real butter)
Eating this way naturally supports detox pathways and hormone balance, without any crazy cleanses.
How this Helps Your Hormones
All of these ideas, from adding in the right foods, resetting sugar intake, lowering caffeine to moving your body, will influence:
- Blood sugar lowering sugar and processed foods intake can help keep your blood sugar more steady, and avoid those energy slumps
- Cortisol can be nourished (if it’s low) or calmed down (if it’s high), so you can have better sleep, mood and weight
- Estrogen can benefit to give you more mental clarity and better mood
- Thyroid can benefit from whole foods, less sugar, and help you feel less sluggish
Spring cleaning your health doesn’t have to be drastic or extreme. Tweaking things in small ways can make all the difference in your hormones and how you feel!
