When Life Feels Like Too Much—Start Here
Let’s be real. The world has been heavy lately. I hear this from women I talk to in my functional medicine and health coaching practice, who are struggling with stress and how it’s affecting their health and life.
Add in the hormone shifts of midlife and peri-menopause, a few nights of terrible sleep, and a to-do list that never ends… and it’s no wonder we feel stretched thin.
In the last couple of weeks I spoke to some amazing women’s groups about this exact topic: How stress affects women’s hormones—and what you can actually do about it.
Here’s what I want you to hear:
You are not weak for feeling this way.
Your body is actually doing its best to protect you.
When we’re overwhelmed—mentally, emotionally, physically—your nervous system sends out the call for help.
That call often comes in the form of elevated cortisol, your main stress hormone. And over time, this can lead to:
- Waking up tired (even after 8 hours of sleep)
- Weight gain around the middle
- Cravings and blood sugar crashes
- Trouble falling or staying asleep
- Mood swings or low resilience
- Feeling “off,” anxious, or disconnected
- Cortisol becoming depleted, and you being exhausted and tired
Here’s the good news:
We can’t control the world—but we can control how we care for ourselves inside it.
Here’s where to start: 5 Things You Can Control Today
- How you start your morning
Instead of scrolling the news, try 2 minutes of deep breathing, morning light, or protein-rich breakfast to anchor your system. - How often you pause
Stress builds up fast—especially if you’re tired, wired, or in menopause. A few intentional pauses during your day can lower cortisol and help your body feel safe again. - What you feed your body
Blood sugar crashes = more cortisol spikes. Try building your meals around protein + healthy fats to keep hormones more steady. Dial down the sugar, dial up the protein! - What boundaries you protect
Turn off the news. Say no. Go to bed early. Rest. Boundaries aren’t selfish—they’re hormone support. This is about protecting your energy, I do this and it makes all the difference. - How you talk to yourself
Midlife isn’t easy, but you’re doing better than you think. Self-kindness shifts your stress response faster than criticism ever will.
You don’t have to control everything. Just start with what’s yours.
Your nervous system will thank you.
Your hormones will respond.
And little by little, you’ll start feeling steady again—even when life isn’t.
If stress has been stealing your sleep, energy, or motivation lately… I see you.
And I can help.
