And those restrictive diets? They’re not sustainable. Hunger, mood swings, stress-eating—it’s all one big loop. What if, instead, you tapped into the power of your hormones?
Here’s what I’ve seen with my functional medicine and health coaching clients: weight loss is just the start—the real magic happens when you get healthy from the inside out.
Here are the key players in your hormonal chemistry lab:
- Cortisol is your “stress hormone”. When you’re chronically stressed, this hormone can wreak havoc on your metabolism, weight, mood, and sleep. Want long-lasting health? Cortisol needs to be in check, so testing this hormone can be key to knowing how to jumpstart your metabolism.
- Insulin is your blood sugar boss. Too many carbs and sugars, and insulin kicks into fat-storage mode, leaving you tired, sleepless, craving junk, gaining weight, and hungry all the time.
- Thyroid is your metabolism regulator. Most doctors only test for one thyroid marker, but did you know there are at least eight you should be looking at to get the full picture? This includes testing for 2 markers for autoimmune low thyroid, Hashimoto’s disease, which can definitely keep you stuck with your weight!
Sleep is essential for balanced hormones. If your hormones are out of whack, you’re probably not sleeping well—and we all know how much that impacts everything! Plus if you are not sleeping well this can impact your weight.
So, instead of beating yourself up for not fitting into the latest “diet” box, how about we focus on YOU and your unique hormonal makeup? Your age, stress levels, health history, and lifestyle all play a role in what your hormones are doing behind the scenes.
Sometimes, all it takes is the right hormone testing, a few tweaks to your diet, some key supplements, and lifestyle changes to see massive results. And the best part? It has to be SUSTAINABLE. Otherwise, you’ll keep going in circles.
That’s why those pre-packaged meal programs fail long-term. I can’t tell you how many times a client has told me they lost weight with one of those, only to gain it all back (and then some) when they stopped.
Let’s break that cycle with some simple, sustainable tips:
1. Get real with your eating habits: Are you relying on convenience foods or takeout? What’s your lifestyle like, and how does it influence your choices?
2. Go for whole foods: Plan your meals, shop intentionally, and make sure your fridge, freezer, and pantry are stocked with healthy options like proteins, veggies, fruits, nuts, and grains (if they work for you!).
3. Healthy can be convenient: With a little planning, you can make whole foods work in your busy life. Try meal delivery services that offer healthier choices—convenience doesn’t have to mean unhealthy!
4. How’s your Stress? No matter if you think you have things under control, if you have stress in your life this can impact your cortisol hormones!
Your food is your fuel, and when you fuel right, you feel right, and your hormones will thank you!
