Your thyroid…
If it’s working well, you feel great.

And if it’s not, well, then you not only may not feel so great, but you may also not know what’s causing you to feel that way.

Here’s the thing, most women I see in my hormone testing and health coaching programs have had some kind of thyroid testing by their general practitioner.

Have you been tested and told that your thyroid is “fine”?

This is where it gets tricky.

Because the “regular” lab range used by your general doctor is very wide, while the functional medicine lab range for optimal health is narrower.

What this means is that women are falling through the cracks!

Low thyroid, or hypothyroidism is very common and under diagnosed!

You may be told by your doctor that you are “fine”, but you still have fatigue, stubborn weight gain that won’t release, low mood, hair loss, insomnia and being cold…

This is NOT all in your head!

It really is your hormones.

The other issue is that your GP will only test ONE test, your TSH. But there are many other thyroid tests that need to be run to get the full picture. You have 2 types of thyroid hormones in your body, T3 and T4, and the TSH is only testing your T4.

But wait, there’s more….your T3 is the actual active hormone, so if you don’t test that, then you can’t really know how your thyroid is functioning!

When I do hormone testing on my patients, they get a minimum of 5 thyroid tests. This is to get to the true root cause!

Now, what if you are on thyroid medication, and still don’t feel well? This can be super frustrating, right?

You may be asking why isn’t the weight coming off with the medication? Why don’t I have more energy and better mood?

This again, is where things can get tricky.

There are 2 things to consider here:

  • You may be on the wrong medication, like a T4 only (Synthroid or Levothyroxine) and you may need to have the T3 added in if your cells can’t convert the T4 to T3. (Disclaimer, as a licensed chiropractor, I don’t prescribe medication, but this is common knowledge and the first step is to get the right testing).
  • The other hormone that can be affecting you is your cortisol, which is an adrenal hormone. Cortisol raises or lowers with stress, and is your “stress hormone”, and what happens with your cortisol affects your thyroid.

While your thyroid hormone is your gas pedal (to make you go)….

Your cortisol hormone is your gas tank, and you won’t go far with an empty tank.

So the bottom line is to not let your thyroid SABOTAGE you. You need to know exactly what’s going on with this important hormone if you have any of these symptoms:

  • Fatigue
  • Weight gain and being stuck
  • Hair loss
  • Feeling sluggish
  • Constipation
  • Being cold
  • Depression, low mood
  • Muscle aches

Because all of these things can sabotage your health, your relationships, your business or job, your family life.

And I know, because 20 years ago I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s low thyroid, which is an autoimmune condition. I was really at a low, not just with an autoimmune thyroid disease, but also with low cortisol. Between the low thyroid and adrenal fatigue, I couldn’t get off the couch.

My thyroid, and my cortisol hormones, were sabotaging my LIFE! and 20 years ago this information was not well known.

This is what led me to become certified in functional medicine, not only to help myself, but to help other women not go through what I went through.

The cool thing about working with functional medicine, is that it not only helps you get to the root cause with testing, it uses natural methods for healing, with nutrition, supplements and lifestyle, to create lasting and sustainable change.

So, if you need help, I have your back! Know that not only do I have a lot of experience working with women with this, but also I have struggled with this myself, with a great success in healing these hormonal imbalances.

Getting your hormones tested, and having a nutrition and supplement plan customized to you based on your testing can make ALL the difference in your health and life!
